Keeping Families Covered

Their mission is to eliminate the barriers that exist to access basic human needs for the most vulnerable residents in our community. They give away diapers and incontinence products through our diaper bank and mobile diaper pantry. They also provide other essentials like baby wipes, infant formula, new/gently used maternity wear and children’s clothing/shoes (birth to youth size 12), baby care equipment and children’s books.

Nicasa is a not-for-profit behavioral health services organization that is building brighter futures for vulnerable and at-risk children, adults, and families in Lake County and northern Illinois. If you have never had a chance to work with Reggie Moore or Arnitta Holliman, you have missed out on collaborating with two people who truly have a love for the city of Milwaukee. The people and the work that they do here do not get the credit they deserve, but OVP is one of my go to answers when people ask about what things are being done to curb violence and bring about positive change in Milwaukee. Their 414 Blueprint is something that everyone should take a look at.

Farina Brooks is hands down one of my favorite people walking earth and she has used Facebook Messenger to bring together an amazing group of people from all across Milwaukee County who are working together to support & uplift our community. This team is providing everything from grocery pop-ups, to back to school events, to block parties, to simply providing for the needs of a specific family that has fallen on hard times.

Who said that pastors can’t have fun & get things done? When the COVID-19 shutdown eliminated jobs & caused families to struggle to simply put food on the table, this group of churches came together and provided thousands of pounds of food for people in need. Such a great group of pastors here who are literally helping out their “neighbors” in tangible ways.

His organization is changing lives, one man at a time, with a residential program for men who are coming off the streets or out of the prison system. What is being accomplished through the work Marty is doing is absolutely mind-blowing.

I was introduced to this organization by Rachel Schepp and fell in love with what they are providing to the surrounding community. This is the place where women can go for compassionate care & free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, & baby supplies. Their willingness to walk alongside and answer the hard questions is what we need more of in today’s society.

Emerald Mills has been bringing people of different cultures together over meals since I first met her. Her organization champions the belief that “real change requires real relationships,” and they are accomplishing this by providing spaces that are courageous, compassionate and connected through curated diversity & inclusion programs and unique cultural dining experiences that dissect biases and impact change. She is one of those people that you feel you’ve known forever when you meet her. And if you really want a good laugh ask her to introduce you to her father, Richard Mills!

B.A.S.I.C.S.

Laurie & Greg Hendrickson are literally changing lives through their Front Row Seat event that they do once a month. This is where they bring together 40 – 80 people, break them up into evenly split groups of multiple cultures and allow them to share personal experiences & thoughts on the effects of racism. If you have never heard of anything like this, be sure to check out the videos on their website.

African American Civic-Engagement Roundtable

When I think about the fight for social justice & equality in Milwaukee WI, one of the first names that comes to my mind is Markasa Tucker, who serves as the Director of this organization. She is a real as they come, with a heart to match and has the AART involved in too many initiatives for me to even list here. However, if people are thinking that racism/inequality is the Immovable Object, then here in Milwaukee, the AART is the Unstoppable Force.

If you know that you have a passion for working with youth and a desire to reach them for Christ, then this organization is one that you absolutely need to connect within your area. I’ve been to several of their “clubs” and I guarantee that you’ll have outrageous fun, everyone always belongs, and you’ll be talking with young people about what really matters in life – including God’s extravagant love for them.

For a number of years, I felt that there were so few people who really understood the heart of those of us who feel called to working with urban/inner-city youth. Then I met the director of UYWI, Tommy Nixon, and instantly felt like I had come home! UYWI is developing and training the next generation of leaders who operate on the front lines in urban centers in the lives of youth. I’m honored to serve as the regional director for the urban youth network that has been launched in Milwaukee covering Wisconsin & Illinois.

If you have ever wanted to be a mentor to a young person, then you need to contact this organization. And if you know a young person who would like to be connected to a mentor, then you need to contact this organization. I have been connected to this group through Nikki Hill, who is not just a friend, but also serves as their Program Coordinator, and is someone that we are truly blessed to have serving here in Milwaukee.

Jacarrie Kicks For Kids

My first meeting with Jacarrie was supposed to be 30 minutes, and two hours later I knew that I had a new brother to chase change in the lives of young people with. His organization was Wisconsin’s Non-Profit of the Year and he is literally changing lives two feet at a time through his program that a program that collects, and distributes free, clean, comfortable shoes for students of Milwaukee Public Schools.
